Quality Tested & Ethical Teas - Our high standards

Not only do we believe in providing the best tasting teas, but also sourcing the best quality leaves that have been produced through best farming practices.

This is only possible by adhering to the most stringent quality testing standards that are implemented by the European Union — some of the highest standards worldwide. As a member of The German Tea Association, our exporters are committed to observing the Code of Practice for Quality Control as stipulated by the association. This includes working closely with many tea-growing regions in order to monitor pesticide residue levels as well as effecting specifications for organic certification. Because of these strict guidelines few tea growers are able to produce tea leaves that fully comply with EU standards. Quality testing is not regulated when it comes to selling tea and because it is a costly process, many tea sellers will choose to import and sell teas that have not necessarily met minimum pesticide residue (MPR) levels, and other quality indicators.

At The Tea Centre we are very selective with our product. Out of the 4.6 million tonnes of tea that is globally produced each year, we will import about 50 tonnes from a handful of non-restricted gardens. In some instances, certain gardens can only export early season harvests as these are the only leaves that can meet EU requirements, and thus our own high standards. These standards also extend to our beliefs in ethical farming and quality of life for tea workers. In addition to visiting tea estates and personally meeting with tea producers we have also developed relationships with organisations that support the fair treatment of those working in tea farming and production. Where possible, we have chosen to stock a selection of teas that stem from these regions. By doing this we hope to encourage a more sustainable future for tea production both environmentally, and for tea-growing communities.

Quite uniquely, our teas are also air freighted into Australia every 6-8 weeks and are thoroughly inspected upon arrival. Compared to many other suppliers whose teas may sit at sea for months while being shipped, our teas are only in transit for a matter of days ensuring consistent freshness up to the moment the leaves land in your teapot. We have also endeavoured to locally source our herbal tisanes from Australian suppliers, as well as carrying some teas that are 100% Australian-grown.

All of these qualities are what we believe make our teas second to none. The exceptional conditions under which our teas are produced enhance the purifying experience of enjoying a simple cuppa and it is these virtues that are reflected in every sip.
