What is Rooibos Tea?

Rooibos , or “red bush tea,” is a herbal infusion made from the leaves of the Aspalathus linearis plant native to the Cederberg region of South Africa. Unlike traditional tea made from the Camellia Sinensis plant, rooibos is caffeine-free, making it an excellent choice for those sensitive to caffeine, or to be enjoyed before bed.

Indigenous communities in the Cederberg region have been using rooibos for centuries, both as a beverage and for its potential medicinal properties. In the 20th century, it gained global recognition, becoming a beloved tea enjoyed for its unique taste and wellness benefits.


How is Rooibos Different from Tea?

Rooibos has a few distinct differences that sets it apart from teas from the tea plant;

  • Rooibos boasts a naturally sweet, earthy flavour with mild nutty undertones, setting it apart from the more astringent taste of traditional teas.
  • Traditional teas contain caffeine, whereas rooibos is naturally caffeine-free, making it a popular choice for those seeking a calming brew without the stimulating effects of caffeine.

How to Brew Rooibos Tea


  • 200 ml freshly boiled water
  • 1–2 tbs of loose rooibos tea or one rooibos tea bag


  1. Preheat Your Teapot or Mug: Pour a small amount of hot water into your teapot or mug, swirling it around to warm the vessel.
  2. Add Rooibos Tea: Place the loose rooibos tea or tea bag into the teapot or mug.
  3. Pour Hot Water: Fill the teapot or mug with freshly boiled water, allowing the rooibos to steep.
  4. Steeping Time: Let the rooibos steep for 5 to 7 minutes for optimal flavour.
  5. Optional Additions: Customise your cup with honey, lemon, or a splash of milk if desired.
  6. Enjoy: Sip and savour the rich flavours of your freshly brewed rooibos tea.
