Where to begin with The Tea Centre’s extensive tea range

New to what the wonders of tea have to offer? Not completely sure of what flavours might suit your palate? No matter where you currently are on your tea journey, The Tea Centre is here to help! Our tea spectrum is incredibly wide and varied with plenty of options for a captivating cuppa.

How to navigate The Tea Centre’s 150+ range of teas

  • Choose a tea type
  • The Tea Centre has broken down our menu into four distinct sections: Classics (black tea, green tea, oolongs, white tea, and breakfast blends), Fusions (earl greys, jasmines, chai, and other black/green tea fusions), Wellbeing (herbals, rooibos, and fruit tisanes), and Premium (single estate, high-grade tea, or rare teas). Pick the one you think will best please your palate!

  • Select a tea and how its presented
  • While every tea in our range comes as a loose leaf, our most popular blends also come in pre-packaged loose leaf gift tins and as biodegradable tea bags. Pick the presentation that best suits your lifestyle!

  • Purchase your tea
  • Purchasing loose leaf tea? If it’s not packaged in a gift tin, you can choose how little or much tea you would like, starting at 50grams! If this is your first time trying out a new tea, we suggest only purchasing 100grams to ensure you love the blend before buying in bulk. Our loose leaf gifts tins hold roughly 120–160grams of tea (depending on the density of individual leaves) and our teabags tins hold 25 teabags each.

    A guide on tea strengths

The term “strength” when it comes to tea is usually in relation to flavour, with each tea category boasting varying flavour strengths. If you’re looking for a tea based on the strength of its caffeine content, then black tea (especially our strong breakfast blends) or unprocessed white teas are a good way to go. Moreover, matcha—a powdered Japanese green tea—has a higher caffeine content because the leaves are consumed in their entirety rather than as an infusion. The "strength" of a tea in terms of taste can also relate to tannin content. Tannins are a type of polyphenol that's present in many different botanicals, and it is responsible for that slightly bitter/astringent flavour in many different varieties of tea. Black tea and green teas generally contain the most tannins while white tea contains the least.

How does origin impact a tea’s flavour profile?

Just like wine, the taste of tea will differ depending on where and how it’s cultivated. For instance, Darjeeling is typically grown at a higher and cooler elevation and produces a light-tasting infusion when compared to the dark, malty infusion of an Assam, which is grown in low-lying, greenhouse-like terroir. Although they are both black teas from India, their characteristics are quite different. This will apply to all other varieties of tea depending on the countries they’re from and the way they’re produced. Each item’s tasting notes (provided in their product descriptions) will offer the best idea of what to expect.

What are the health benefits of drinking tea?

Many cultures across the world originally drunk tea and herbal tisanes for their perceived health benefits. While a number of studies have been done on the health benefits of black and green teas, the other tea types and herbal tisanes are largely understudied. For these reason, many of our teas take inspiration from folk medicine or holistic Eastern teachings like Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. Therefore, we encourage sipper to pick a tea based on taste instead of health benefits.

Moreover, the ritual of making tea can be akin to a self-care routine, as it can feel very calming and purposeful. Tea can also act as a soothing way to wash the day away. All of this makes starting a tea collection a worthwhile investment.

Buy tea online or in-store at one of The Tea Centre's stores

Here at The Tea Centre, we pride ourselves on the elite quality of our tea and work hard to ensure your tea drinking experience is luxurious and thoroughly enjoyable. It’s all part of our plan to provide you with the finest tea possible.

Making a pot or a cup of tea using loose leaves is not as difficult as it sounds, with a variety of simple-to-use infusers and strainers available. However, if you are looking for a quicker alternative, we do also offer a range of teas in biodegradable pyramid tea bags, including black tea bags, green tea bags, and herbal tea bags.

Hunting for other sorts of teas? Look through our selections of black teas, green teas, and herbal teas to find the ones that are right for you.
