What is chai?

Chai, meaning tea in Hindi, is a popular beverage that originated in India and is now enjoyed by many countries around the world. One of the most popular black tea fusions in the world, traditional Indian chai is generally made up of black tea, milk, various spices and a sweetener. This assists in bringing out the flavour of the spices. Although the spices can vary from region to region, the most common chai spices are cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and pepper. All of which produce a brew that’s both sweet and spicy.

Our chai blends draw inspiration from some of the most popular flavours found within the chai brewing regions of India and Siam (modern-day Thailand). India has a myriad of street vendors selling their brews on practically every street corner. They generally prefer a much sweeter concoction than what most Australians are used to although chai truly is a delicious treat not to be missed when visiting India.

Chai can be purchased here in Australia pre-blended or you can create your own, which allows you to focus on your favourite spices. Here at The Tea Centre, we have seven varieties to cater for every taste. We have everything from a green chai blend to rooibos chai (caffeine-free) and several varieties of black chai blends. Masala chai, in particular, is our blend that’s most similar to a standard Indian chai.

Chai is perfect on its own or can be brewed with milk and a dash of honey for extra creaminess. With chai blends based on black, rooibos and green teas, there is a perfect chai for everyone!

What are the health benefits of chai?

The spices found within our chai blends boast a variety of benefits, including anti-inflammatory and Ayurvedic properties. Chai is great for supporting a healthy heart and common ingredients such as ginger and black pepper are known to aid digestion. The anti-inflammatory properties in the cloves, cardamom, and cinnamon-infused chai blends are also lauded for reducing blood sugar levels.

Thanks to its incorporation of black tea leaves, chai contains a healthy amount of caffeine, making it a great alternative to coffee for those looking to stay energised throughout the day. Many of the black tea leaves in our chai have high polyphenolic content, and therefore assists in helping tea drinkers receive their daily dose of antioxidants. These health benefits make adding chai to your tea selection at home a worthwhile investment.

Buy chai online or in-store at The Tea Centre tea shops

Here at The Tea Centre, we pride ourselves on the elite quality of our tea and work hard to make them luxurious and thoroughly enjoyable. You will notice that our chai is beautifully fragrant and enticing, with elements of cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves featured in teas across our range. It’s all part of our plan to provide you with the finest tea possible.

Preparation of chai is open to the individual. Some brew it like a standard cup of tea while others like to boil it in milk on the stove. Then again, some others like to brew it like tea and add condensed milk, making a lovely, but somewhat sweet, latté. How you brew it is up to you and your personal preferences but it’s always best to experiment a little until you find the way you like it most.

Chai has also become popular to use when baking cakes, slices, and biscuits as the spices lend themselves to some lovely flavours. Hot chocolate chai infusions are also becoming popular as an alternative to the standard sweet treat enjoyed by many on a cold day.

How to brew a cup of chai

To brew a perfect cup of traditional stovetop chai you need to do the following.

Pull together all the essentials:

  • The Tea Centre chai (3–4 teaspoons)
  • Water (1 mug)
  • Milk (1 mug)
  • Honey (or preferred sweetener)
  • Medium saucepan
  • Strainer
  • Once you have these items you will need to:

  • Pour water into a saucepan
  • Scoop in 3–4 teaspoons of chai
  • Bring mixture to a simmer on medium heat
  • Next add the mug of milk and bring to simmer again
  • Simmer for at least 5 minutes before turning off heat
  • Stir in a dollop of honey
  • Pour mixture through strainer into mugs. Enjoy!
  •

Making a pot or a cup of chai tea using loose leaves is not as hard as it sounds, with easy-to-use infusers and strainers available. However, if you are looking for a quicker alternative, we do also offer a range of teas in silk pyramid tea bags, including black tea bags, green tea bags and herbal tea bags.
