Ceylon tea and the history of Sri Lanka go hand-in-hand. “Ceylon” was the colonial name that the British gave Sri Lanka when they wrested the country from the Dutch in 1796. Although the country became Sri Lanka in 1972, the nation continued to refer to their exported tea as Ceylon given the word had enjoyed a 176-year-long association with their tea estates.
While the British brought the first tea bush to Sri Lanka sometime in the early nineteenth century, it wasn’t until 1867 that a Scottish pioneer named James Taylor established the first commercial tea plantation in the Sri Lankan city of Kandy. Today, Sri Lanka is the world’s fourth-largest producer of tea, and the industry contributes around $1.5 billion USD to the Sri Lankan economy every year!
