Green tea is perfect for those who want a more herbaceous or vegetal flavour with less of a caffeine hit compared to black teas (aside from matcha!). With green teas from Australia, China, and Japan to choose from, as well as our range of delicious green tea fusions, there is a green tea that’s sure to suit every taste.
Although green tea was historically produced in China, Japan and Taiwan, green tea is now grown and produced in many other parts of the world thanks to globalisation; even in some of the traditionally black tea producing countries! Although we have a great selection of traditional green tea and flavoured green fusions, we are always looking to supply Australian loose leaf where possible. This is why we currently stock Australian Alpine sencha, a lovely green tea from the country regions of Victoria, which is processed in much the same way as a traditional Japanese sencha.
What are the health benefits of green tea & is green tea good for you?
Any health guru will tell you how good green tea is for your wellbeing (and now many studies also exist to prove it)! Green tea is a hydrating beverage and a fantastic source of antioxidants. The catechins and small caffeine content can boost your metabolic rate, which in turn can assist with weight loss. All of which make adding green tea a worthwhile investment!
Global green tea is widely regarded as a healthy and antioxidant-packed brew and is a popular alternative to black tea given its generally lower caffeine content (again, matcha is an exception to this)! How much green tea should I drink everyday?
There is no magical number of cups that one should drink in order to reap the optimal health benefits that come from sipping on green tea. Anything from one cup to five cups could have a positive impact on your body—however, this benefit changes depending on your own personal health. As a general rule of thumb, anything from three to five cups is considered a normal and reasonable amount of green tea to consume per day.
How to brew a cup of green tea
To brew a perfect cup of green tea you need to do the following.
Whether it be a traditional or flavoured green tea the trick is not to over-brew it. Brewing it for too long or using water that has just boiled will often result in a bitter tasting green tea that is not enjoyable. Many people make this mistake and are turned off green tea as a result. But when made properly, green tea is a truly lovely and refreshing beverage that can be enjoyed any time of the day. Here are some tips on how to make the best cuppa!
It is best to brew filtered water but this is not essential. Water used should be below boiling point at about 80°C. If you don’t have a temperature-controlled kettle, turn your kettle off before it reaches boiling point and allow it to sit for a minute before pouring.
Alternatively, if your water has boiled then allow it to sit for about two minutes before pouring over your leaves, It also helps to pour some cold water over the leaves first. With finer green teas, the water can be as low as 70°C. If the water is too hot, it will burn the leaves and produce a bitter tasting brew.
Generally, green tea should be infused for approximately 2–3 minutes. The finer leaf varieties infuse between 1–2 minutes and the larger leaf 2–3 minutes. All green loose leaf teas can be used more than once and some high grades can even withstand a number of infusions if used on the same day.
