Reinvigorate your body and mind with matcha!

Matcha is a fine-grade, powdered Japanese green tea that’s rich in antioxidants and high in caffeine. Matcha powder is traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies and its recent rise in popularity is no surprise given the unusually high concentration of nutrients it contains.

Matcha powder

Matcha powder is produced in nearly the same way as the finest grade premium Japanese green tea gyokuro as both are derived from specialised cultivation of camellia sinensis—à la the tea plant! Just before harvest, the tea leaves are shaded for three weeks. This method encourages an increase in chlorophyll content, which gives the matcha powder its signature vibrant green colour.

Unlike regular green teas, the grounded leaves that make up matcha powder are consumed in their entirety rather than infused. This means that the chlorophyll, l-theanine, catechins, and caffeine levels in the powdered tea are plentiful and beneficial. Such concentrations provide anti-aging benefits that are not only great for revitalising the mind, but provide a great energy boost for the body.

Here at The Tea Centre, we have a gorgeous range of delicious matcha powder for you to enjoy.

What are the health benefits of matcha powder?

The health benefits that come from regularly sipping on matcha go way beyond its satiating and silky taste and is the perfect solution for coffee drinkers looking to get their caffeine kick from a healthier source! Tea made from matcha powder is fantastic for helping prevent organ damage, with multiple studies concluding that concentrated green tea extracts significantly reduce the enzyme levels that often lead to liver disease. Matcha is also good for promoting heart health, as its anti-inflammatory properties and significant amounts of EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate) work to regulate blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart problems. Positive benefits to the body aside, consider pouring a cup of tea made from matcha powder the next time you want to relax and unwind during some well deserved “me” time. Make it an occasion and enjoy the soothing aromas and elegant flavours of matcha through using a matcha ceremonial tea set. Or, during summer, whip up a batch of iced tea made with matcha powder to cool down with style.

Making a mug of tea is also a great gesture of hospitality and a wonderful way to welcome someone into your home. Spend time together with those you love with a mug of matcha in hand and make them feel welcome. Meet your match when it comes to healthy living by adding matcha powder into your tea selection at home.

How to brew a cup of matcha

To brew the perfect cup of matcha you need to do the following.
  • Scoop one teaspoon of matcha powder and add to your cup or matcha bowl
  • Pour in approximately 50ml of water at 80°C. Boiling water will burn the tea, making it bitter
  • Whisk your matcha with a bamboo whisk or with a fork in an ‘M’ shape motion. Ensure that all lumps are broken up so that your matcha becomes frothy and smooth
  • Top up your mixture with more hot water, stirring as you do
  • Serve and enjoy!
  •

Making a pot or a cup of tea with matcha powder is not as hard as it sounds, with easy-to-use matcha whisks and ceremonial tea sets available. However, if you are looking for a quicker alternative, we do also offer a range of teas in silk pyramid tea bags, including black tea bags, green tea bags and herbal tea bags.
