Japanese sencha consists of green tea leaves first plucked in the first and second flushes of the summer and autumn harvest. Unlike bancha (a lower grade of Japanese green tea), sencha is only made from fine whole leaves from higher up on the tea bush—stems and lower leaves are discarded in the process.
Meaning ‘roasted tea’ in Japanese, sencha is the perfect brew to welcome guests with as they enter your home on a cold winter’s day! Our homegrown counterpart, Australian Alpine Sencha is cultivated using the same Japanese techniques but grown in Wangaratta in the Victorian Alps. All sencha boasts an intricate sweetness mixed in with slightly astringent tasting notes due to the unique steaming process the loose leaves undergo to prevent further oxidisation. What are the health benefits of Japanese sencha tea?
Like all green tea, sencha is beneficial when it comes to one’s holistic health, and can have a positive impact on both body and mind. As well as being a non-diuretic substitute to coffee thanks to its healthy levels of caffeine, sencha tea is also thought to lower bad cholesterol. This is due to its ECGC and high catechin count, which in turn helps defend the body against certain cancers and is even thought to assist with weight loss. All of which makes adding sencha into your tea selection a worthwhile investment.

How much sencha should I drink everyday?
There is no magical number of cups that one should drink in order to reap the optimal health benefits that come from sipping on green tea. Anything from one cup to five cups could positively impact your body; however, this benefit changes depending on your personal health. As a general rule of thumb, anything from three to five cups is considered a normal and reasonable amount of green tea to consume per day.
