The Tea Centre’s different types of traditional green tea

Traditional green tea comes from the tea bush (camellia sinensis) and retains the plant’s brilliant green colour due to its quick oxidation process. While all of our green tea is oxidised for a similar period of time, our traditional green teas are particularly unique due to their history, ritualised consumption, processing methods, or regional variations:

  • Sencha: the most commonly drunk green tea in Japan. Often used to greet guests when they come into their home. Our Shimizu sencha in particular is a premium tea as the leaves are infused with rich minerals, having grown at the base of Mt. Fuji.
  • Gyokuro: a unique shaded green tea from the Kagoshima prefecture in Japan. Typically a darker green colour due to the restriction of chlorophyll in the last thirty days before harvest. It’s growing method makes this traditional green tea particularly nutritious and antioxidant-rich.
  • Lung Ching: unlike most Japanese green teas, Chinese green tea is often pan-roasted. Our Lung Ching loose leaves in particular are hand-plucked and renowned for their premium taste.

What are the health benefits of Traditional Green tea?

Each traditional green tea comes with its own unique health benefits. However, all green tea share common medicinal properties. For example, all of our traditional green teas help with digestion and are filled with antioxidants. Green tea consumption is also thought to boost metabolism. So it is well worth adding traditional green tea into your home collection.

Enjoy the soothing aromas and elegant flavours of a freshly brewed traditional green tea even during summer by whipping up a batch of iced tea like chilled Hojicha to cool down with style.

Making a mug of traditional green tea is also a great gesture of hospitality and a wonderful way to welcome someone into your home. Spend time together with those you love with a mug of traditional green tea in hand.
