What is herbal tea?

Unlike traditional teas (black tea, green tea, white tea, and oolong), herbal teas do not come from the common tea plant whose scientific name is camellia sinensis. In fact, calling herbal teas “teas” is actually a popular misnomer (the correct term is herbal “tisanes”) given these brews are derived from seemingly everything but the common tea plant!

Herbal tea or tisanes are umbrella terms to cover any beverage made by infusing flowers, fruit, spices, roots, leaves or herbs in hot water (i.e. brewed the exact same way as traditional tea) and has its origins in traditional medicine practices across the world. In saying that, The Tea Centre's collection is largely comprised of herbals inspired by Chinese traditional medicines, European folk medicine, and Indian Ayurvedic practices.

Here at The Tea Centre, we have also partnered with renowned Australian naturopath Mim Beim to retail several tailored naturopathic herbal blends that support your holistic wellbeing. We suggest purchasing her Tea: Health & Happiness book for an even more thorough breakdown on why tea drinkers have love sipping on herbal tisanes since the beginning of time!

Wash the worries of the world away by integrating a cup of herbal tea into your daily tea ritual. It’s sure to soothe your mind and revitalise your body.

What are the health benefits of herbal tea?

For centuries, herbal teas have been used by many cultures around the world for therapeutic and recreational purposes; you could even consider herbal tisanes as man’s first attempt at medicine! The world of herbal teas is seemingly endless, to the point where even the health benefits of the most popular herbal blends—think peppermint, chamomile, yerba maté, rooibos and hibiscus—remain largely understudied. Yerba maté exempted, most herbal tisanes are naturally caffeine-free and make for a great wind-down sip. To discover potential health benefits beyond that, be sure to check the product descriptions of the herbal teas listed above!

Given the overwhelming amount of herbal blends currently on the market, The Tea Centre has compartmentalised our range into eight easy wellbeing categories for you to explore: relaxation teas, cleansing teas, energising teas, immunity teas, soothing teas, vitality teas, rooibos, and fruit tisanes. Choose the category that best suits you and find the perfect herbal tisane today!

How to brew a cup of herbal tea

To brew a perfect cup of herbal tea you need to do the following.

  • One teaspoon or two grams of your favourite herbal tisane per 200ml.
  • Pour in water at 95°C, or just below the boil.
  • Steep for 5–7 minutes or longer for a stronger flavour.
  • Many herbal teas are suitable for making iced tea.
  •

Here at The Tea Centre, we pride ourselves on the elite quality of our tea and work hard to make them luxurious and thoroughly enjoyable. You will notice that our herbal teas are beautifully fragrant and enticing, with elements of hibiscus, peppermint and dandelion root in different teas across our range. All part of our plan is to provide you with the finest teas possible.

Making a pot or a cup of herbal tea with loose leaves is not as hard as it sounds, with easy-to-use infusers and strainers available. However, if you are looking for a quicker alternative, we do also offer a range of teas in biodegradable pyramid tea bags, including black tea bags, green tea bags and herbal tea bags.

Interested in other teas? Look through our selections of black teas and green teas to find the ones that are right for you.
