The Tea Centre’s range of decaffeinated tea
As you can see above, we have an assortment of best-selling teas made decaf for you to enjoy! The Tea Centre often receives a plethora of questions around our decaf collection, which is why we’ve answered some of the most common ones below:
What is decaffeinated tea?
Decaffeinated tea is simply the blends you know and love stripped of the stimulant commonly known as caffeine. There are multiple ways that tea can be stripped of caffeine, and not all methods are made equal (see the next paragraph)! Every year, 10,000 tons of decaffeinated tea is produced worldwide. It is a popular choice for tea drinkers who are caffeine-sensitive but love the flavour profile of black and green teas.
How is tea decaffeinated?
Currently, there are three different methods tea companies can use to create decaf teas—you can read all about them here. The Tea Centre uses the best and most natural method—decaffeination using carbon dioxide (CO₂)—that doesn’t use potentially toxic chemical solvents.
This odourless, naturally occurring chemical compound is considered the most effective and non-toxic option for decaffeination. Although the CO₂ decaffeination method is the most expensive, it is also known for being the best at preserving the flavour and health components of the tea. This is why The Tea Centre supplies decaffeinated teas produced only by this method.
Is decaffeinated tea truly caffeine-free?
Not exactly. “Decaf” doesn’t mean a complete absence of caffeine. As a rule, decaf brews should only contain about 1-2.5% of the original caffeine content. If caffeine is an absolute no-no in one’s diet, then our wellbeing range and rooibos tisanes are your best options for a cuppa.
What are the health benefits of decaffeinated tea?
Most blatantly, the biggest health benefit of decaf tea is the dilution of caffeine. This makes our decaffeinated tea a great substitute for coffee. It’s also the go-to sip for those who may have a low tolerance for caffeine. Even those who aren’t caffeine-sensitive may prefer to sip on a decaffeinated version of their favourite blend when it’s later in the day.
Consider pouring a cup of decaffeinated tea the next time you want to relax and unwind during some well-deserved “me” time. Enjoy the soothing aromas and elegant flavours of freshly brewed decaffeinated tea even during summer by whipping up an iced decaf tea drink.
