The Tea Centre—Australia’s best specialist tea supplier

The Tea Centre defines specialist tea in two ways! The first type of specialist tea is the high-grade loose leaf from small tea estates across the globe. Our premium teas fall into this category. We also define rare loose leaf (like certain white teas and Pu-erh) as speciality too.

What are specialist teas?

A speciality loose leaf tea will fall into any of the following categories: it’s sourced from a reputable, non-restricted tea garden (otherwise known as single estate tea), has a high tea grading (leaves or buds plucked from the tip of the camellia sinensis plant), is plucked using unique methods (orthodox teas are plucked by hand) or is a bonafide rare tea (only harvestable during certain times or difficult to source to Australia).

Some of these teas are difficult to source and supply, but as Australia’s favourite tea specialists, The Tea Centre does the hard work because our tea lovers deserve the best! Specialising in premium blends, The Tea Centre sources such loose leaf from across the globe from small batch productions. If one of our specialist teas is out of stock, this may be due to seasonal availability.

Consider pouring a cup of our finest tea the next time you want to unwind during some well deserved “me” time. Making a cup of speciality tea is also a great gesture of hospitality and a wonderful way to welcome someone into your home.

Popular types of premium specialist tea

  • White teas: All white teas are considered premium due to their high tea grade. With the majority of white teas, only the buds and perhaps the first leaves and top stems are harvested.
  • Pu-erh teas: Pu-erh tea (also known as pu’erh tea) is a fermented black tea from the Chinese province of Yunnan, characterised by its red liquor and earthy flavour. Pu-erh tea leaves are often compressed into tea cakes or bricks that are wrapped in various materials.
  • Single origin: The opposite of breakfast blends, single origin tea is made using loose leaves that come from the same tea garden and the same batch. Given this makes supply amounts smaller and the tea more exclusive, single origin teas are often considered premium teas.

    How to brew specialist tea?

Given The Tea Centre supplies a wide variety of premium and specialist tea, how you brew speciality tea depends very much on the loose leaf itself! Be sure to check the back of your tea bag/tin/box or the “brewing guide” that’s attached to each of our tea product descriptions for detailed instructions. Alternatively, we have a general brewing guide for you to use here.
