The Tea Centre’s convenient and eco-friendly tea bags

Say goodbye to dusty pouches filled with leftover fannings. The Tea Centre’s premium range of tea bags is fully biodegradable, GMO-free, and filled with only our finest large leaves. This means our tea bags offer the convenience you know and love without sacrificing wellbeing (for both you and the environment) or flavour!

We offer our full range of bestseller teas in eco-friendly tea bags, which are then perfectly encased in signature air-tight Tea Centre tins or biodegradable refill cartons. This ensures our tea bags look beautiful when stored in your kitchen cabinet while also guaranteeing long-lasting freshness. Our tea bags are also the perfect addition to any gift and are a staple in any tea lover’s pantry.

The history of tea bags

Did you know that the invention of the tea bag was a complete accident? The history of the tea bags goes back to 1908 when a New York tea trader named Thomas Sullivan hoped to minimise shipping costs by packaging loose leaf tea being transported to prospective clients in small silk pouches instead of crates (which was the norm at the time). One of Mr Sullivan’s clients incidentally dropped his pouch in a cup of hot water when attempting to spoon out the loose leaves...and the tea bag was born!

The tea bag then went through a number of manufacturing upgrades—or downgrades, according to some tea purists—where silk pouches were switched out for gauze and later paper (which allowed for optimal brewing but were less eco-friendly) and the loose leaf filling was switched out for the dusting and tea fannings (which are more cost-efficient but sacrificed on flavour). The Tea Centre has learnt from the history of the tea bag by offering a range that does not compromise the environment or flavour, but is still easy to use and comes at an affordable price.

What benefits make The Tea Centre’s tea bags special?

Unlike other commercial tea bags currently on the market, The Tea Centre’s tea bags are made of compostable material and do not contain harmful glues or chemicals. Our tea bags are made from 100% sugarcane, which means they are not only biodegradable but GMO-free! This is unlike cornstarch tea bags that, while compostable, may contain GMO elements.

You can also purchase our tea bags encased in signature Tea Centre tins, which not only look great but are reusable as loose leaf tea storage! Simply bring your empty tea tin to your closest Tea Centre store and we will refill it at no extra cost.

Finally, The Tea Centre is not stopping there! We also have our consciously crafted range of refill cartons where the interior NatureFlex bag is biodegradable and our tea bags are presented in a gorgeous AND compostable outer package. This makes our tea—at every level—something you can feel good about.

Consider making a cup of tea using one of our tea bags the next time you want to relax and unwind during some well-deserved “me” time. Enjoy the soothing aromas and elegant flavours of freshly steeped tea bags. You could even bring a tin of our tea bags to work; that way, you can enjoy the finest teas any time during the day.

How to brew tea using a tea bag

  • Use one tea bag for every 200ml or 250ml of water
  • If your tea bag is filled with green tea, steep for 2–4 minutes in 80°C water
  • If your tea bag is filled with black tea or flavoured black tea, steep for 3–5 minutes in boiling water
  • If your tea bag is filled with a herbal tisane, steep for 3–7 minutes in water that’s just under boiling (95°C)
  • Enjoy!
