The history of tea bags
Did you know that the invention of the tea bag was a complete accident? The history of the tea bags goes back to 1908 when a New York tea trader named Thomas Sullivan hoped to minimise shipping costs by packaging loose leaf tea being transported to prospective clients in small silk pouches instead of crates (which was the norm at the time). One of Mr Sullivan’s clients incidentally dropped his pouch in a cup of hot water when attempting to spoon out the loose leaves...and the tea bag was born!
The tea bag then went through a number of manufacturing upgrades—or downgrades, according to some tea purists—where silk pouches were switched out for gauze and later paper (which allowed for optimal brewing but were less eco-friendly) and the loose leaf filling was switched out for the dusting and tea fannings (which are more cost-efficient but sacrifice on flavour). The Tea Centre has learnt from the history of the tea bag by offering a range that does not compromise the environment or flavour, but is still easy to use and comes at an affordable price.

Unlike other commercial tea bags currently on the market, The Tea Centre’s tea bags are made of compostable material and do not contain harmful glues or chemicals. Our tea bags are made from 100% sugarcane, which means they are not only biodegradable but GMO-free! This is unlike cornstarch tea bags that, while compostable, may contain GMO elements.
Our tea bags are then encased in our signature tea tins, which not only look great but are reusable as loose leaf tea storage! Simply bring your empty tea tin to your closest Tea Centre store and we will refill it at no extra cost.

We are currently working on creating a consciously crafted range of tea where the inner packaging is biodegradable and our tea bags are presented in a gorgeous AND compostable outer package.
