The Tea Centre’s curated collection of Japanese tea ceramics
Japanese-made ceramics is the ideal teaware for when brewing the perfect cup of tea is just as important as showing off your teapot. You can greatly enhance the tea drinking experience with our high-quality ceramic Japanese tea sets, teacups, teapots, and mugs. All of our Japanese teaware sets are crafted for Japanese tea, although other loose leaves will taste just as great inside these ceramics as well.
Most of our Japanese-made teaware is made from gorgeous ceramics. Ceramic teaware boasts better heat retention properties in comparison to porcelain/bone china teaware. They also transfer less heat. Moreover, Japanese-made ceramics are very durable and require little maintenance. Their lightweight feel is the finishing touch on our neutral yet contemporary Japanese teaware.
The history of Japanese ceramic teaware
Did you know that the history of ceramic teaware production in Japan goes all the way back to the Kamakura period (and the history of pottery itself a millennia before that)? Korean and Chinese earthenware techniques initially inspired Japanese ceramics. It was only when Japanese master craftspeople began acquiring innovative designs and manufacturing methods that tea ceramics became distinctly Japanese. These Japanese ceramics then travelled back to China on the backs of monks and priests, where they eventually came into the hands of the emperor. This was the catalyst that made Japanese pottery the esteemed practice it is today. The popularity of Japan-made ceramic has only grown in conjunction with the enduring success of authentic Japanese tea ceremonies.
What makes Japanese ceramics special?
Japanese ceramics are very unique for two very polarizing reasons. That is because there are two aesthetic traditions associated with Japanese-made pottery. The first is the Zen Buddhist practice of creating simple organic pieces often with a rough finish; you’ll find this tradition often in teaware with muted colours made of earthenware. The second is the art of glazed ceramics, where designs are still simple but highly formed and sport colourful patterns made from special finishes. You can find both types of Japanese ceramics in our above range.
How to brew tea in a Japanese tea bowl, tea cup or teapot
The secret to the perfect cup of tea is to brew the correct amount, at the correct temperature, for the correct amount of time! This differs depending on the type of tea being brewed and the quantity of tea leaves chosen, so we suggest checking out our brewing guide to make sure you get the most from your leaves! Simply load an infuser with one teaspoon of tea per cup being brewed and let the leaves steep.
How do I clean my Japanese ceramics?
To get the longest life out of your Japanese ceramics and keep them looking at their best, we recommend cleaning after every use with warm soapy water and ensuring your teaware is dried thoroughly before storing. We recommend hand washing over dishwashing our teaware—especially with ceramics that boast gold paint or intricate pieces—as they require gentle attention.
Over time, the inside of your teaware may develop a stain from the tannins found in tea—these tannins will be more prominent in black teas than in other tea varieties. To remove this mark, you can use a mixture of bicarbonate soda and vinegar to gently scrub at the stain.
