Regional differences

Choosing a contemporary, traditionally English or traditional Japanese tea set can be based on whether you intend on keeping your set out for display purposes or are planning to use it for specific purposes.

  • English-style tea sets:the teapots in many English-style tea sets will not contain an infuser and usually come in the larger 4–6 cups size (600–650ml capacity).
  • Japanese-made tea sets: Japanese ceremonial tea sets are quite varied and come in all sorts of materials, shapes, and sizes. They are usually smaller than English-styled tea sets, with 400ml capacity and above (about 2–4 cups). Several in our range will come with traditional small cups that have no handles.
  • Contemporary teapots: these teapots are usually more neutral in design and crafted with practicality in mind. However, such innovative designs can be quite attractive in their simplicity.

    Teaware material differences

In the same way that a carpenter is lost without his tool belt, a tea drinker can’t enjoy the full experience of tea without the proper tea set on hand! When it comes to choosing the perfect set to suit your lifestyle, it’s important to consider the following pros and cons of each type of teaware material.

  • Ceramic: traditional feel and retains heat well. However, this material is more prone to chipping than others
  • Glass: aesthetically pleasing to watch tea leaves unfurling during the infusion process. However, glass does not retain heat as well as other materials
  • Earthenware: traditionally, there’s no washing up required as earthenware is said to retain the memories of the tea and tea drinker
  • Porcelain: beautiful pure white colour and an convenient material for teaware. Used to be very delicate but is now much more durable
  • Bone china: Developed in England by combining porcelain and bone ash. Considered more durable than regular porcelain
