Lapsang Souchong Tea
An enjoyable sip from dawn to dusk. Lapsang Souchong is one of the world’s oldest, boldest, and arguably smokiest black teas. Specifically, lapsang souchong translates to “pinewood small leaves” in English. This black tea produces a fragrant and strong brew that perfectly complements spiced foods. Most enjoyable on its own, though adding the smallest dash of milk is not unheard of.
Famous for being Winston Churchill’s favourite tea, this black tea boasts a history that’s just as fascinating as its taste. Did you know this loose leaf was one of the first black teas to come into existence? The story goes that an enemy army camped near a tea factory in the Fujian province, China. This caused factory workers to look for ways to dry their new tea leaves (camellia sinensis) quickly so operations were not halted by the army’s arrival. As a result, they began roasting the leaves over pinewood fires, giving the brew its distinctively smoky flavour!
While Lapsang Souchong’s smoky flavor might not be to everyone’s taste, it has a dedicated following among tea enthusiasts who appreciate its bold and distinctive characteristics.
If you like the sound of a smoky tea, but are intimidated by the intensity of a Lapsang Souchong, worry not! Our Russian Caravan Tea is the perfect stepping stone, and is a milder, less intense tea, that still sports that signature smoky flavour. If you happen to also be a fan of more floral flavours, you’ll likely love our Sir John Tea – an exquisite blend of Jasmine and citrus amongst smoky tea leaves.
Today, The Tea Centre sources this smoky tea from pristine tea gardens in Taiwan. Looking for a luxurious gift for your tea-loving friend? They are bound to love this brew, along with The Tea Centre’s Keemun finest and Yunnan finest teas! Explore our curated collection of black teas here.
