ROOIBOS TEA — SOUTH AFRICAN ‘RED BUSH’ HERBAL TISANE
Let us take you through the plains of South Africa with their pristine native rooibos tea. Rooibos (pronounced roy-bos) means ‘red bush’ in Afrikaans. This herbal tisane comes from the fine red leaves of the South African aspalathus linearis (‘red bush’) plant. A beautiful amber upon infusion, this tisane is naturally caffeine-free and a source of antioxidants. Ideal with or without milk and enjoyable throughout the day!
Interestingly, the oxidised aspalathin in red bush not only gives it the characteristic copper colour but is also thought to have antidiabetic effects (according to some studies). Moreover, rooibos tastes similar to black tea while remaining caffeine-free because they contain the same flavanols (quercetin, myricetin and kaempferol). The result is a beverage with the same maltiness as black tea, but a smoother mouthfeel (fewer tannins) and a lighter body akin to Darjeeling.
The history of rooibos is just as interesting as its taste! Known as the ‘life-long’ tea in Africa, the Khoi-Khoi tribes of South Africa have cultivated rooibos as tea for the past three centuries. In a nod to the tea’s popularity, our company boasts a dedicated collection of six rooibos teas. Alternatively, you can shop our entire range of herbal teas here.
