YERBA MATÉ GREEN LEMON TEA
One of the few tisanes in the world that comes bursting with caffeine! Yerba maté green lemon tea is a love affair between South American and Australian native ingredients! This is a zesty brew made up of Queensland lemon myrtle and the South American Ilex paraguariensis tree. Specifically, the latter plant is indigenous to countries like Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina. First cultivated as a medicinal ingredient by the Guaraní people, yerba maté soon became synonymous with South American drinking culture. In fact, one census found that 98% of Argentinians have yerba maté in the kitchen cabinet at home!
Upon infusion, yerba mate has distinctly earthy flavours with smoky notes and umami aftertaste. Such unique flavours and camphorous aroma can taste strange at first. However, South Americans love this brew for its health benefits! Unlike coffee, yerba maté is thought to boast a “clean buzz”. Find out more about this tea’s fun properties here. Furthermore, the addition of lemon peel and lemongrass provides a delightful citrus twist.
You can make yerba maté the exact same way as tea. However, there is a traditional way to drink it! Yerba maté is normally drunk from a decorative gourd using a metal or stainless steel spoon-like straw called a bombilla. You can purchase your own yerba maté straw here. After some maté, sans the citrus elements? You can enjoy the original loose leaf here.
