Back in 2012, I wrote an article in The Tea Centre’s E-news Letter about two new teas we were introducing – Kerala FTGFOP1 (large leaf) and Kerala TGBOP (small  leaf). These two black teas from India are found under our ethical range of teas and have established themselves as firm favourites with many of our customers.

Our organic Kerala teas have been developed by small farmers and an NGO (non-government organization) in the Kerala area. In fact the plants grow in an area called Peermade, which is a quality growing region in the Western Ghat Mountains. The area is well known for its bio-diversity, good growing conditions, pleasant weather and an area where many herbs and plants are grown for Ayurvedic medicine.

The Peermade Development Society, the NGO, was created after the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kanjirapally, had it brought to his attention, the difficulties suffered by the small farmers at the hands of the more dominant plantations. The Small Farmers Project was conceived and became an ambitious project for Peermade Development Society, Sahyadri Organic Tea Farmers Consortium and Tea Promoters India. Today there are around 500 small farmers associated with the project.  Farms range in size from 1.5 to 3 acres of cultivating land. The dominance of the larger tea plantations has now been broken because of this imaginative project in southern India. The Tea Centre continues to increase its range of organically produced teas from around the World.  The inclusion of the Kerala Organic teas also helps us to promote our principles. If you haven’t done so already you should consider trying either of these beautiful organic teas; Kerala FTGFOP1 Small Farmers Tea Project
